According to the Desert Sun, about half of the Coachella Valley’s nursing homes received lower scores on the federal government’s five-star grading scale following the implementation of tougher standards.The new standards include measurements of how often facilities use anti-psychotic drugs and refine the metrics for assessing staffing levels. That includes a new federal distinction between nurses and lesser-trained aides. Regulators hope new standards will encourage improvements in nursing homes nationwide.
So why does The Fountains at The Carlotta consistently score high? According to Executive Director Lisa Hollinger, “because of amenities like restaurant-style dining and staff that goes beyond the minimum.” “We’re not required to have RNs staffing every shift, but we do,” Hollinger said of registered nurses.
